Abstract

Propentofylline is known to improve the late behavioral problems of the stroke patients. In this open trial, we tested the clinical efficacy and safety of propentofylline in 21 patients whose stroke lesions became stabilized after a mean period of 18.9 months (mode: 11 months; range: 3-92 mon-ths). The drug was given orally at the dose of 100mg t.i.d. (300mg per day) for 8 weeks. The 4-week-interval neurobehavioral tests showed that propentofylline had improved subjective symptoms (p<0.01), emotional disturbances(p<0.01), decreased spontaneity(p<0.01), and average daily living activities(p<0.05). There were only a few minor side effects like transient diarrhea and mild SGOT and SGPT elevation. We conclude that propentofylline can be used as a safe and effective agent for the stroke patients with late neurobehavioral sequelae.
